MAINE'S 207 AREA CODE PROJECTED TO LAST UNTIL 2050, ACCORDING TO NEW NANPA FORECAST
October 31, 2025
Hallowell, Maine -The North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) has released its October 2025 exhaust analysis, projecting that Maine's single 207 area code will now last until the first quarter of 2050. This represents a significant extension from NANPAs previous projection, issued in April 2025, which had forecast an exhaust date in the first quarter of 2045.
The new analysis places Maine among the states with the longest remaining area code life spans nationwide. NANPA estimates that national area codes are expected to reach exhaust between 2052 and 2060.
The Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) attributes the continued longevity of the 207 area code to efficient number management practices and ongoing efforts toward rate center consolidation, which reduce the rate at which new numbers must be assigned. According to Consolidated Communications, which is playing a key role in rate center consolidation, the number conservation strategy could be implemented as early as March of 2026.
"The 207 area code is part of Maines identity," said Chair Philip L. Bartlett II. We are pleased that careful number conservation measures and collaboration with the telecommunications industry have extended its life well into the middle of this century.
The Commission continues to work with industry partners to ensure that Maine maintains its single statewide area code for as long as possible-potentially matching the overall lifespan of the national numbering system.
When NANPA first began projecting area code exhaust dates, Maines 207 area code was expected to be depleted by 2024. The latest analysis underscores the success of the Commissions ongoing conservation initiatives.
